HIDDEN WORLDS  – REVEALING THE UNSEEN

“To see the world in a grain of sand,
And to see heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hands,
And eternity in an hour.”

        William Blake.

An invitation to discover Hidden Worlds, revealing the unseen and hitherto unnoticed beauty of the extra-ordinary "micro-minuscule-magic" that surrounds us . Exploring the unseen on a microscopic level, Alex Levetan and Nikolai Hodel proceed to manifest these Hidden Worlds on an impressive scale in our physical world . The artworks serves as conduits that challenge the viewer to consider looking deeper than the obvious and investigate the possibilities of the undiscovered in the Hidden Worlds that surround.

Nikolai Hodel, a Swiss epidemiologist and artist who spent nearly two years in Tanzania working at a governmental hospital, also seeks to capture those magical moments of transformation whereby-spectacular new words are conjured into being. On the beach and in the hospital’s backyards, he collected plastic beads and laboratory plastic waste which he then photographed and processed in order to liberate color and tone from pixilation. The resultant photographs achieved a startling crescendo of chromatic brilliance as if the whole palette operated on a different far higher frequency in landscapes inhabited by all manner of bird and fish-like creatures.

By bringing the art back from Switzerland to its source on African soil, Nikolai provides us with a salutary opportunity to reflect on how the industrialized nations of the West exploit Africa as a dumping ground for waste thus inflicting irreparable damage upon the continent.

To quote Alexander Levitan, “I have always used my art to celebrate the seemingly quotidian and prosaic in which I find an inner beauty that only needs to be made visible in order for people to appreciate it. I am drawn to patterns, shapes, color and compositions that are inherent in what I photograph, but not immediately apparent as they are so infinitesimally small the eye cannot discern them. Using 1Mac as my creative tool, I have delved into the most minute of spaces, pried into the tiny, unseen crevices, unearthing the gems within and projecting them onto the grand scale through digital manipulation. It is this process of discovery and revelation that is the basis of my artistic and aesthetic inspiration.”
